VAN DIEMEN'S LAND

The Rev. Rowland Robert Davies, the respected Episcopalian Chaplain of the Norfolk Plains district, is about leaving for England on leave of absence for two years. The unabated Christian zeal with which the reverend gentleman has pursued the duties of his office in that district, for many years, will cause his temporary absence to he severely felt by the members of his church. His removal will not be less regretted by Christians of other denominations in this part of the colony, with whom he has always been found forward to unite in general works of benevolence and Christian love.

If there is anything, however, which can tend to alleviate the pain of the parting farewell to his parishioners, and the sensible loss of Christian co-operation to his dissenting friends, it will certainly be that his pulpit is likely to be filled by such a clergyman as the Venerable the Archdeacon Henry Jefferies, of Bombay. This reverend gentleman lately arrived in the "Indus" at Hobart Town, on sick leave for two years, - the precise term of Mr. Davies's leave, - and on the return of the Archdeacon from Sydney, whence he has proceeded in the "Indus," we believe there is no doubt he will occupy the pulpit at Longford. The following notice of his departure from India, which we extract from "The Bombay Times," will be read with interest by members of all denominations of Christians in this colony:-

"We understand the Venerable the Archdeacon embarks on Monday for New South Wales, whither he proceeds on sick leave for two years. We cannot announce without regret the departure, for so long a period, of one of the oldest and most estimable members of this society, and one whose simple and blameless life has been an eloquent commentary on that Gospel of which he has so long been a zealous minister. Mr Jefferies carries with him the hearts and well wishes of all who know him. We believe he will find in New South Wales an extensive and untrodden field for the diffusion of those Temperance principles which he so ably advocated here, and which he has so much at heart." - "Bombay Times," July 13,1839.
